Lord John Monks to speak at Greenwich

Lord John Monks will survey trends in modern capitalism and their effects on society in a talk entitled ‘Inequality, the City and Trade Unions’. These trends include globalisation, migration of people and jobs, rapacious financial services, value extraction as the goal of many in business, and increasing inequality.  Can trade unions counter these trends and if so, what actions are possible and desirable? Can government? What are the roles  of the nation state and of the European Union?

Lord Monks was the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress and then general secretary of the European Trade union Congress. He is now a member of the House of Lords.

The talk is part of the University of Greenwich’s Big Picture seminar series. It will take place on Wednesday 5 March 2014, from 5 to 7pm in the Stephen Lawrence Building, Room SL101, University of Greenwich, Old Royal Naval College, Park Row, London SE10 9LS.
